Washington Renaissance Faire
Appropriate Behaviour, Anachronisms and Moral/Legal Issues

Site Rules and Expectations

Included herein is what we expect of those who work with us as volunteers, participants, actors, performers, merchants and our camping guests. The hold harmless and waiver that is signed at check in acknowledges the receipt and agreement to comply with these and all posted rules.

Behavior on the Faire Site: Please maintain a level of behavior that you can be proud of. Be respectful of the land we are using and clean up any messes you make. Remember that all Washington State, Mason County and Belfair laws and ordinances are still enforced and upheld on the Faire Site. These include, but are not limited to: Sexual Harassment, Statutory Rape, Assault, Contributing to the Delinquency of a minor, Theft, Burglary, Auto Theft, Drug Laws, Alcohol laws, etc. Please refrain from damaging and illegal behavior while on the Faire site. Please do not bring illegal weaponry, paraphernalia, etc. onto the Faire site. Anyone found to be involved in criminal behavior will be turned over to the custody of the Police.

Camping: Please camp in designated camping areas or inside your merchant booth if you are a vendor. If you are unsure of whether or not you can camp in a certain area please check with our Camping Coordinator, Shon Cleveland or the participant gate staff. Please do not camp in the fire lanes. Please keep in mind that open food left out will attract insects and small animals. Please obey Security if you are asked to quiet your campsite down as we are all trying to have fun, but let’s be respectful of others. Secure all personal valuables and do not leave your tents open when you are away from your campsite. Vehicles are not allowed to be parked in the camping area. Please unload your vehicle and then park your vehicle in the designated parking area. The only exception to this is if you are sleeping in your vehicle, it may remain in the camping area.

Alcohol: Alcohol is served in the Ale Houses during Faire hours and for a limited time after hours. You must be 21 years old and have a valid ID on your person at all times while in the Ale Houses. The Faire site is dry except for the Ale Houses. No alcohol that was not purchased in the Ale House may be consumed in the Ale Houses or on the Faire site. There is no tolerance for under age drinking. Any minor found to be drinking alcohol will be taken to their guardian/parent and asked to leave the site. Any adult found to be serving alcohol to minors will be reported to the proper authorities and also asked to leave the site. No second chances. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Smoking: Smoking is allowed in designated areas only. Please observe the posted signs as to where it is appropriate for you to smoke. Please do not drop cigarette butts on the ground. They do not decompose and we must pick them up. Please also remember that August is a dry month in Washington and lighted tobacco can cause fires. Be courteous and be safe.

Weather and Health Concerns: The weather in Washington can be unpredictable. It can be hot during the day and cool at night. During the heat of the day, wear sunscreen, drink water and rest when needed. The costuming that many of us wear can cause dehydration and heat stroke. If you have a problem or need medical assistance please go to our Medical Aid Tent during Faire and to Security after Faire hours. Please be responsible for yourself and your children and know your own limits.

Lost Children and Parents: If you observe unattended children, it is never a bad idea to ask them if they need assistance. If you come upon a child who is lost, or a parent looking for their child, contact Security Immediately. Do not try and find the parent or child yourself, Security has radios and can sweep the Faire Site more effectively for the lost parent or child.

Port a Potties: The toilets on site are for a specific purpose and I think that everyone knows what that purpose is. The toilets are not trash cans. It is not amusing to damage or destroy them. We have to pay for any damage to the potties. If you come across a pottie that needs attention or is damaged, please alert Security or Administration Staff for assistance.

Parking: Please park in designated “Staff Parking” only. There will be signs that designate where staff should park. You may bring your vehicle onto the Faire site and into camping area for unloading only. All cars/trailers need to be in the PARKING LOT after unloading. Please do not park in the FIRE LANES or your vehicle will be towed at your expense. Please place the vehicle identification pass in the window of your vehicle so we can know who belongs to which car/trailer. There is designated handicapped parking near the Castle Gate. Only those with handicapped tags issued from the State are allowed to park there. The Washington Renaissance Faire is not responsible for loss or damage to your vehicle or its contents. Please lock your vehicle and secure your personal items. Vehicles parked improperly (for example in the fire lanes) will be towed off site at the owner’s expense.

Minors on the Faire Site: Minors are welcome at the Washington Renaissance Faire. Minors who are participating/ volunteering must have a permission slip that has been signed by their parent/guardian on file with the Faire Staff. Children under 16 years old must be accompanied at all times by a parent or guardian that is over the age of 21. If you have brought your children to work Faire with you, please control and look out for them. Accidents can happen and all the children are expected to be closely monitored. Please do not allow children to become problematic for other actors, administration, merchants or security. Children who are a problem at Faire will be brought to their parent/guardian and asked to leave the site.

Harassment Issues: Faire is supposed to be fun. There is a big difference between a bawdy joke and true harassment. If you feel as though you are being sexually harassed or that you are in any danger from another person, please talk to Security and they will help you.

If you feel that a Guest is harassing you, do NOT take matters into your own hands by swearing, hitting or abusing the Guest. Walk away from the Guest and report the matter to Security immediately. If you are physically injured or restrained by a Guest, do what you deem to be the least violent appropriate action to remove yourself from the situation and immediately report to Security.

Please avoid overtly sexually explicit innuendo with other Actors and Guests. Many people find this to be harassment in and of itself, and the truly witty person doesn’t need to use coarse language. Be creative and remember, we are a FAMILY Show!

Wristbands: Everyone remaining on site after hours must have a wristband. This band will be issued when you arrive and may not be removed. A new color band will be issued each weekend. Removal of the band will result in either your being asked to leave the site or requiring that you pay admission and being issued another band. They are water resistant and can be worn the whole weekend. It is ok to cover them with clothing or jewelry during the day, but after hours must be visible and shown when asked.

Participant Check-In: Check –in will occur on Friday before each weekend of Faire from 9am – 12 midnight. For check –in on Saturday and Sunday after 8am please go to the Participant Gate for check in and wristbands, not the Castle Gate. If your name does not appear on the gate list you will be directed to the Castle Gate to pay your admission and camping fees. Please remember that our check - in crew are volunteers. If there is a question or problem have them contact Tracy Nietupski from Administration to help resolve this problem.

Property Issues: The Washington Renaissance Faire is not responsible for the loss or theft of any personal items belonging to merchants, actors, volunteers, workers or volunteer performers while they are on the Faire site. Please be careful with your personal property. We are an honest bunch but there is always a bad apple in every bushel.

Please remember that we are a themed event and many items that are appropriate in the present were not available in the Renaissance Period. Do not use your cell phone, ipod, or sparkly orange sun glasses during Faire. We are trying to create the illusion that our Guests have stepped back in time and these things easily break the spell. Thank you for reading and following these simple rules. Have Fun at Faire!
